The Impact of a Good Cup of Coffee

My first cup of coffee was from a train station kiosk in 2014 – I hated it. 12-year-old me simply could not handle the intense, overwhelming, bitter taste and had coffee jitters all the way home.

Despite this, something still drew me towards coffee; I wanted to love it. The occasion, the science behind it and the attention to detail required from the baristas. I eased myself into it until eventually I reached the point of appreciating how incredible a smooth, balanced cup of black coffee could be.

It quickly became the highlight of every day. Whether it was taking the time to grind fresh beans to brew at home or after long days at school – seeking out new, unique cafes to relax, meet people and take time to appreciate such a simple yet meaningful thing – the smells, tastes and sounds made it a full sensory experience which is shared universally. It brings people together, increases productivity, wakes you up, calms you down and the most incredible thing is that this can be experienced in any corner of the world.

This industry is obviously a very special one and vital to keep society functioning, so as an assistant roaster, I feel very lucky to be at the heart of this coffee culture every day and provide others with the ingredients to experience the impact that a good cup of coffee can bring.
